Vespers Of The Self:

Untroubled Acceptance

“Self-observation is the first step of inner unfolding.” – Amit Ray

The ability to look deeply within oneself is the beginning of thoroughly understanding oneself. Only through intense internal reflection can a person become aware of their innermost beliefs and in time learn how to govern, shape or even change those beliefs. Though it can certainly be painful at times, self reflection is the first step on an odyssey of potentially endless self realization and personal improvement.

“Darkness cannot drive our darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Fighting fire with fire only prolongs the blaze. If you’re upset with something or someone, take a breath, calm yourself and try to consider the issue from a broader or alternate perspective. Strive to objectively understand the problem, rather than emoting or passing a value judgment. It’s easy to get swept up in your feelings when dealing with difficult situations, but only through a calm and collected understanding can you make rational decisions.

“The best fighter is never angry.” – Lao Tzu

Composure in the face of opposition allows for the most effective recourse. Just as fighters condition themselves to stay calm under pressure, anyone can learn to navigate the challenges of life more competently by tempering their emotions. Though it’s true that emotion can sometimes impart more passion to physical action and in turn create more power, this is akin to pouring gas onto a raging fire. You may indeed create a larger blaze, but in mere moments you’ll find yourself facing an uncontrollable inferno.

“The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” – Norman Vincent Peale

Inner peace is not a destination, but rather an endless journey of self actualization. Though this pilgrimage is fraught with endless challenges, every inch of the expedition brings new insights and abilities that strengthen you against those obstacles yet to be overcome. As you will invariably improve with each step you take, there is truly no limit to what you’re capable of accomplishing.
