Clouded Significance:

Acceptance Of The Immutable

“We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” – Joseph Campbell

In life, it’s very important to stay motivated, to listen to your heart, to stride confidently towards accomplishing your goals. Taking charge of that which can be controlled empowers you, it lifts the spirits to lofty heights and illuminates that you are often capable of far more than you ever imagined. However, though many elements of the physical world and the obstacles it presents may be tamed, bent to your will as it were, the reality is that many constituents objectively cannot. For these issues, the solution is to turn inward and cultivate a perspective of acceptance. Never allow yourself to become trapped in the endless pursuit of an untenable goal. Only through accepting that which cannot be changed can you find peace and realign your focus, towards those things which can.

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu

Regardless of your preparation, the best laid plans are often hindered or demolished by the obstacles you will encounter on your journey through life. Rather than dismaying at the loss of structure you had intended to impose on your odyssey, you must learn to accept what cannot be changed and reevaluate your situation in order to move forward both eagerly and fruitfully. In these moments, let go of your expectations, stop fretting about what you wanted life to be and refocus your perspective on experiencing, enjoying and prospering from what it is. Many of the best things in life arise unexpectedly, sometimes born from the miseries that have befallen us. Don’t overlook these things, or try to force them into submission. By doing so, you’re likely to miss many profound opportunities.

“Some people believe holding on and hanging in there are signs of great strength. However, there are times when it takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it.” – Ann Landers

Resilience in spite of challenges to your being or your goals is certainly a sign of strength, but stubbornness or delusion in the face of physical reality is not. This will only lead to one’s demise. Reframing your perspective to create positivity when challenged with a difficult situation produces a quantifiably productive outcome, but being obstinate, unable to accept something that is objectively absolute, will only lead to sorrow. Knowing when to accept or when to resist is one of the greatest difficulties in life and it is, of course, situationally dependent. In the end, we each must discover our own understanding and balance of when to endure versus when to embrace.

“Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years when they could just say, ‘So what.’ That’s one of my favorite things to say. ‘So what.’” – Andy Warhol

Never let the issues in your life that you cannot change get you down. Rather, work towards accepting them, moving forward in spite of them, becoming empowered by changing your perspective and reframing them. Sometimes it is best to simply say something akin to, “so what?” and refocus your viewpoint and efforts elsewhere, so that you may move forward in your life and accomplish new goals. Often, your forward progress or success will impart a new perspective, a new sense of confidence that will diminish the suffering created by past, unchangeable woes.
